Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a magnetic imaging technology used in radiology. It studies with great precision many organs such as the brain, spine, joints and soft tissues.
MRI is highly recommended when very precise analysis is needed, especially when tumours are not visible on standard X-rays, ultrasounds or CT scans.
This technology produces cross-sectional images at different levels and reconstructs the analyzed structure in 3 dimensions.
The device helps us search for:
- At the level of the brain: inflammatory diseases, vascular malformations, as well as tumours.
- At the level of the spine: herniated discs in joints, ligaments or articular cartilage.
Types of MRI
There are two types of MRI:
- Closed MRI: a machine consisting of a hollow, cylindrical structure into which patients are slowly inserted. It cannot accommodate people with broad shoulders or who are significantly overweight.
- Open MRI: a device configured differently from a closed MRI, for patient comfort. The open MRI machine features open sides that accommodate a person regardless of their size.
What to expect during your MRI exam
You are required to wear a gown that we provide at the clinic; jewellery, watches and hair clips must be removed. You will have to leave all items containing metal and magnetic stripe cards (such as credit cards) in a safe place outside the MRI room.
The imaging technologist will operate the MRI scanner and give you all the necessary instructions.
Then you will be asked to lie on a padded, movable table that can be positioned comfortably with cushions. The technologist will provide you with sound-isolating headphones during the examination. Earplugs are also available to mute the noise. To get the best-quality images, you should remain as still as possible during the test.
The technician is available at all times and can be called using the call button, which will be placed in your hand. You will be in full view of the technician through a window and a video camera during the exam. Most tests take between 15 and 20 minutes to complete. A parent can also be in the room while a child is being examined.
